January 2010
2 First Saturday - Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

16 Third Saturday - Double BBrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Only a couple of us were wacko enough to fly today. There is a photo flying around but it got stuck under the definition of BBrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr in websters.

February 2010
6 First Saturday -  Looks like the balmy weather from January is heading our way for this weekend, too. It must be that rodent in Pennsylvania.
13
20 Third Saturday - Sunny. Highs in the upper 50s. North winds around 5 mph...becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. It's about time we had a chance to get outside and fly something! The weather didn't disappoint; it was by far the nicest day of 2010. Nine of us came out to fly the light, sometimes gusty, winds. Singles & duals flew well and we had some interested visitors come by to visit. I hope we see them again.

March 2010

6 First Saturday - It's supposed to be beautiful this weekend. Finally! Plenty of sunshine, temps in the 50's and winds possibly 5 - 10. Get your stuff together and lets put on a Springtime show at the park. Hope to see everyone there.
13
20 Third Saturday - The third Saturday in March is the Lake Park Kite Day and we've been invited back. The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. See their website at Lake Park, NC. Let's park on the West side of the field on Mother Teresa Dr. In past years, we've enjoyed lunch at La Unica after the festival. Come a little early and bring your "wind farm".
27 Smithsonian Kite Festival
April 2010 is National Kite Month
3 First Saturday - Today was close to perfect. Just enough clouds to keep it from getting real hot. Just enough wind to keep you from getting bored but a few lulls to give you a chance to take a break. Sure hope it's as nice next weekend.
10 National Kite Month Everybody Come Out and Fly Thing
17 Third Saturday -

Blue Ridge Kite Festival, Salem, Va.

24 Spring Flying at Ft Defiance has moved to May 8th.

Holden Beach Day at the Docks, April 24 & 25th. The last couple years have had pretty good weather and improving beaches. See Holden Beach Merchants web site for more information.

May 2010
1 First Saturday -
8 Spring Flying at Ft Defiance. Magician? Kids flying? Hot air balloon? Chance to tour an 18th Century Plantation?  Beautiful weather in the foothills of NC? Ken of Blue Moon Kites will be there. Check out their website at http://www.fortdefiancenc.org/. Click here to see the publicity poster.
15 Third Saturday - We're flying at Frank Liske Park if it doesn't rain!

The Georgia Kite Festival, Centennial Park, Atlanta. See their web site, http://www.georgiakitefestival.com/

22
23 Sunday - Albemarle Kite Festival, 2 to 5 pm at the Soccer Complex on the Stanly Community College campus. It turned out hot and sticky with variable winds but we had the best winds of the 3 Albemarle festivals so far. Because of the early threat of rain, attendance was light but enthusiastic. And with the light turnout, we all had a chance to talk kites and see some of Oliver's collection of kites from England. He wanted to thank all of us that came out and is already talking about next years festival.
29-31 Memorial Day weekend
June 2010
5 First Saturday - It was hot and it was sticky but it was flyable. We didn't stay long but we flew.

Third Saturday -Another hot and sticky day. Did anyone fly?

26 Fifteen straight days over 90 degrees! I don't want to fly either. Hopefully there's some relief coming. Nothing like a cold front bringing temperatures back into the 80's.
July 2010
3 First Saturday - Tomorrow's the 4th of July. If you're around and want to fly, send out a note and see if anyone wants to join you. Don't know if Frank Liske is open - maybe we ought to try Mint Hill Park. Saturday's looking clear and only 85! Best guess on winds right now are NE 4 - 6 mph. Might be worth checking out if you'll be in town.

October 2010
2 First Saturday - What a beautiful early Fall day! Bright skies, warm and light breezes. As usual, winds were up and down and so were the kites. Too bad there were so few of them out today.
9
12-16 AKA Convention, Seaside, Oregon
16 Third Saturday - What a day! Sunny skies, warm temps and light and variable winds. The nice weather drew more people to the park than we've seen in several weeks. At one point there were eight flyers, a half dozen single line kites, including a triple stack of Premier Pointers plus several dual line kites. And a large family joined us with another half dozen kites and kids of all sizes. As usual, the winds went away about 3 p.m. but it was worth going to the park.
23-24

Carolina Kite Fest, Sheraton Atlantic Beach, Atlantic Beach, NC. See http://www.kites-birdstuff.com/ckf.html.

30-31  Holden Beach Festival by the Sea. See http://www.hbmerchants.com/events.html. Saturday was a beautiful day: temps were in the mid 70's; winds were light in the morning (for great light wind toys) but picked up in the afternoon to get a couple lifters and some Octopi in the air. Once the big kites went up, we drew people away from the festival. There was almost 50% vendors selling their arts & crafts and the festival and lots of people were buying again. Sunday was overly windy, gusting to 25 mph. Great day for kite surfing but not for lifting big inflatable kites. Grumpy, John & Marty represented the club well.
November 2010
6&7 First Saturday - Cape Fear Fun Fly, Wrightsville Beach, web site is http://www.capefearkitefestival.com/.  Fly in front of the Shell Island Resort, website is http://www.shellisland.com/.

Sunny days with temps were in the mid-50's to mid-60's during the day, and nighttime temps in the high 40's. Plenty of good breezes with some very strong gusts that raised havoc on the field. Only two of us were brave enough to fly our lighted cubes Friday night but it was worth it! Unfortunately, Sticky Fingers closed earlier in 2010 so we had to find another place for Friday night dinner. Saturday night's shrimp boil and party was a great success. I've put a few pictures from the weekend on a page there ==>> 2010 Cape Fear\2010cfkf.html <<==.

December 2010
4 Saturday was dark and cloudy and rainy all day and not very much fun to be outside. Some of us decided to fly on Sunday instead and it turned out to be a good choice. Sunday was clear and cold but the winds were better. I won't even guess at the wind chill factor. But pulling tricks or flying a Rev stack really got the blood moving and warmed us up. We weren't there long but we were there and the flying was worth a little discomfort. Unless global warming kicks in, we may not get a chance to fly for a couple months. But keep an eye on the calendar - if we're going to fly, it'll be announced here.

18 Third Saturday -
25 Christmas Day
31 It hasn't been a great flying year but it hasn't been a bad one either. I'm hoping 2011 will bring us good weather, fine winds and plenty of flying companions.

New Years Day is the first Saturday of 2011 and our first flying day of the year. Frank Liske Park will probably be closed but Mint Hill Park will probably be open. If we park on Quail Park Dr (on the west edge of the park by the volleyball court), we should have plenty of room and the winds might be cleaner over there. So bring your new stuff and your old stuff and let's go flying!
